Review Of “Powder“ By Tobias Wolff

In the short story Powder by Tobias Wolff there is an irrefutable relationship that is quite dissimilar. In these two characters of father and son we see a reflection of many modern day “broken home” situations. The standard role of father and son has been reversed in this story. Reversed in a way that real life and many modern day family situations have been replicated.

The development of the father character begins with his son’s flashback of being brought to a nightclub against the will of his mother. He wanted to bring his son to see jazz great Thelonious Monk. With this passage it was possibly Wolff’s intent to portray the father as a reckless parent with no regard for the welfare of his child. In the father’s defense we are left with a disclaimer that the father is only trying to institute a foundation of culture upon his son. The boy was not thrust into this environment with the intent of exposing him to the tribulations of a nightclub atmosphere. It becomes easy for the father to not hold back in the presence of his son. He does not have custody of the boy so he isn’t burdened with the role of disciplinarian. So when receiving time to spend with his son he is able to have fun and not worry about the effects of his teachings.

The boy who is our narrator throughout the story becomes Wolff’s opposition to the father character. Right through the story the boy demonstrates qualities of restraint and level headedness. Almost everything that the father lacks in values the son has made up for with nervous anticipation. The development of the boy’s cautious personality is initiated early in the story when him and his father are making their last run. He is depicted as “sticking to his father like white on rice.” This was an establishment of his tense but well aware personality. He seems to always be thinking ahead and calculating the dangers of his actions and the unpredictable measures of his father. It is obvious the boy has love for his father and possibly tries to be unpredictable like his father, though he is nothing like him in reality. He makes attempts to be as daring or free spirited as his father, while at the same time he continues to hold back.

The tension between the boy and his father creates a bond and a relationship that hold mutual exception. Each character is quite different in personality but not once does the dissimilarity become a problem for either one of them.

At first look these characters seem quite underdeveloped, but after careful examination one should presume these characters to be developed in full. The lack of individual character names was necessary for Wolff to have this story represent a less specific sense of individuality. The fact that we don’t know either of their names aids the reader in relating to these characters. Knowing their names would have made less like you and maybe more difficult for the reader to relate to.

This story becomes so easy for many of us to relate to. Not establishing names and not giving detailed character descriptions is fine, because we have come to know these characters through our own experiences. Many people know these family situations so well that they can paint an identity and description, even without the over written work of the author.

This story becomes a timeless transcript modern day family life. The characters in this story show us the intense relationship forged by father and son. In effort for his readers to be consumed and relate to his work, Wolff has constructed a piece with existence for as long as our culture and family life continues to be the way it is.

读后2
Consider:
In the first sentence, Wolff lets us in on the father's character. Dad likes jazz, a music of improvisation, spontaneity, and abandonment of formal rules. Jazz is a symbol enabling us to understand something essential about the father without Wolff having to tell us directly.

While the father loves the thrill of the blinding snow on the ski slopes, the boy refers to it as "bitter." On the last ski run, he sticks to his father "like white on rice" out of fear—he can't see the trail. That fear is repeated when the two head down the snow-covered road. The boy is anxious when he can't see what's ahead of him.

We never meet Mom, but we feel we know something about her. She seems strict and argumentative. The image of the perfectly set table, just waiting for the red candles to be lit, seems to indicate someone who adheres to order. Mom and Dad seem to be a troublesome match.

The boy is sullen throughout most of the story, uncomfortable with his father's free wheeling style. He's a kid who puts his clothes on numbered hangers, and asks for homework in advance: he's dependent on planning and fears the unexpected, a life that makes no room for spontaneity. No wonder he's terrified when he looks at the snow on the road and can't see in front of him.

The boy crosses a symbolic threshold (the roadblock) and begins to admire his father's skill and finesse, enjoying the excitement of living without complete foreknowledge and planning. He eventually understands that there is something beautiful about not knowing exactly where you are going—the adventure of life.

Powder becomes a symbol for something fresh, a new beginning, covering up of the old tracks, old habits, and offering an opportunity to lay down new tracks.

"Powder" resembles "Bullet in the Brain" insofar as its protagonist, a middle-aged man who aches for a rapprochement with his estranged wife and son, fails utterly to understand his own culpability for his deeply unsatisfying life. Indeed, there is something Sophoclean about the story: the more the father tries to escape what he sees as his ruinous destiny the more he hastens it on. "Powder" takes place on Christmas eve-the final day of an overnight father-and-son skiing trip. The father "had to fight for the privilege of my company," the high-school-aged narrator tells us, "because my mother was still angry with him for sneaking me into a nightclub during his last visit, to see Thelonius Monk" (33). Snow begins to fall, yet the father insists on spending the better part of the day on the slopes, drawing out as much as he can the intimacy with his son which circumstance has afforded him.

By the time they set out for the narrator's home, the highway patrol has sealed off the area. "The road was closed. It might get cleared, it might not," the state trooper setting up barricades tells the father. "Storm took everyone by surprise. So much, so fast. Hard to get people moving. Christmas Eve. What can you do" (34). As soon as the police officer leaves, father and son dodge the barrier and make their way over the snow-covered highway. Though they eventually reach their destination, the father's hope of appeasing the mother by punctually returning the boy-"He promised, hand on heart, to take good care of me and have me home for dinner on Christmas Eve, and she relented" (33)-merely delays the permanent rupture of the family. "I knew that there would be other troopers waiting for us at the end of our ride, if we even got there" the narrator recollects. "What I did not know was that my father would wheedle and plead his way past them-he didn't sing 'O Tannenbaum,' but just about-and get me home for dinner, buying a little more time before my mother decided to make the split final"

Tobias Wolff: "Powder"
Yesterday I received a copy of The Night in Question, a collection of short stories by Tobias Wolff. I've read this before, but decided I should own a copy, since Mr. Wolff is (blush) my favorite writer of short fiction. I admire, among other things, his ability to keep short fiction short. In this collection, "Powder," at four pages, and "Bullet in the Brain," at six, are among the best short-shorts I've ever read.

"Powder" is a straightforward story about an adolescent boy (the pov character) and his father on a ski trip. The parents are separated or divorced; the father has promised to have the boy back to his mother in time for Christmas Eve dinner. But the father tarries, deciding to get in a few more runs, and by the time they set off, the mountain road they must take is closed and guarded by a state trooper. Eventually the trooper leaves his post and the father decides to risk the snow-covered road.

In this story, everything seems to point to disaster. The narrator (an older version of the boy) consistently conveys a sense of worry, at first only that he will be late for Christmas Eve dinner (which has added importance because the father wants to win back the favor of his wife and is screwing this up), but later we fret about their physical well-being. The father sternly warns the boy against such foolhardy behavior. Disaster looms. Yet the boy, who is so tightly wired that he numbers his clothes hangers, is finally able to relax, to trust his father, to accept his fate and enjoy the journey. "If you haven't driven fresh powder," he says at the end, "you haven't driven."

As with many Wolff stories, signposts of "craft" are not so readily extracted from this piece. There are no tricks. Wolff follows a traditional path: he creates an empathetic protagonist (two, really); he gives the characters a clear goal; a problem arises from a character trait; the protagonists suffer a setback; they overcome the setback and the primary protagonist grows, or at least learns something. And all in four pages! What Wolff doesn't do is burden the story with flashbacks or a single word of backstory beyond what is required. He gets to the point quickly without ever making the reader feel rushed. There's even time left at the end for a little protagonistic reflection.

This story is really about the father, and that's the key. The story begins:

Just before Christmas my father took me skiing at Mount Baker. He'd had to fight for the privilege of my company, because my mother was still angry with him for sneaking me into a nightclub during his last visit, to see Thelonius Monk.

What a dad! Not only does he take his son skiing, he fights for the privilege, and this after sneaking the kid into a jazz club. Who wouldn't want this guy for a father? But we also recognize that he is a risk-taker, and we are concerned. The rest of the story echoes this first paragraph. It's all right there.
